I was given an advanced reader copy of M. M. Charles book All the Wrong Ways through the Leave Me Alone I Am Reading book blog.
This was my first time reading M. M. Charles and I must say she can definitely write suspense and intrigue. She wove an intricate story of lies and deceit and suspicion. I thought throughout the book that I sided with one character until it turned and twisted and I wasn't sure who I trusted and wanted to keep reading to find out more.
Having said that, there are a few things that left a sour note in my head. One, there are no redeemable characters in the book. I'm sure this book will meet the needs in its niche market, but I found myself disappointed in the characters, not in the way they were written, because I understood what she was trying to accomplish, but without something for readers to root for, they may be disappointed in the end.
Two, this book is a major rape trigger. There are many rape scenes in the book, and a few are quite graphic. I'm concerned that once people read the first few chapters they will abandon the book due to the nature of what's being written, especially if they aren't forewarned. I have read several books with rape scenes, and while I understand what the author was trying to weave, some people might not be as forgiving.
Lastly, the book ends on unanswered questions. Who is lark? As an author myself, I totally get the idea of trying to get readers to go for the next book, but it left me disappointed. The author wove a great tale of intrigue and suspense, then left me hanging. What I am concerned about is the disappointment in the story and ending might not get readers to come back.
Overall I give this book 3 stars. The writing was great and the story had potential, but I was left disappointed with the characters in the end.
